  17. Shazam and kaboom -- alpha/beta version 0.6 of NCSA's Motif-based
  18. networked information systems and World Wide Web browser, X Mosaic, is
  19. hereby released:

  23. This release of X Mosaic is known to compile on the following
  24. platforms:

  26.   SGI (IRIX 4.0.2) 
  27.   IBM (AIX 3.2)
  28.   Sun 4 (SunOS 4.1.2 with stock X11R4 and Motif 1.1).

  30. Binaries for these platforms (and DEC Ultrix) are available:

  34. More binaries will be supplied as I am able to find other
  35. Motif-configured platforms to use.  (Contributions of working binaries
  36. are welcome.)  The 0.6 Sun binary should work on systems running X11R5
  37. (unlike the 0.5 binary); please let me know ASAP if this isn't so.

  39. Changes since 0.5 are:
  40.  
  41. History window now shows both 'where you've been' and
  42.   'where you can go'.
  43. Previously visited nodes are colored differently, a la Midaswww;
  44.   this global history is automatically persistent across sessions.
  45. New resources for customization, including:
  46.   Show URLs instead of Document Titles.
  47.   Customize window per document feature.
  48.   Optionally have pointer and focus warp to keyword entry field
  49.     when you reach a searchable node.
  50.   Optionally turn off global history mechanism.
  51.   Specify home document (overridden by WWW_HOME env variable).
  52. Button2 can now activate anchors; forces a new window
  53.   to open (as with Window Per Document feature).
  54. Going from a document necessarily wider than the window
  55.   (e.g. preformatted text) to a normal document will now
  56.   get rid of the horizontal scrollbar and reformat properly.
  57. Scrollbar and document page state is maintained so stepping
  58.   through the history list lands you were last in each document.
  59. Addition of Whine option under Help.
  60. Addition of Go To and Go To Local options under Navigate.
  61. Addition of outlet to Ghostview for PostScript documents
  62.   (this is a hack but it's a slick demo feature).
  63. <listing> is now recognized.
  64. Tabs now work in preformatted/plaintext regions.
  65. Numeric character references are now handled.
  66. Anchors without href's aren't colored anymore.
  67. Search Keyword field's sensitivity is managed correctly now.
  68. SIGINT now interrupts network connections too
  69.   (so you can hit Ctrl-C in shell window at any time).
  70. Memory leak in document reformatting nailed.
  71. Cloning a window is now intelligent and doesn't do a network
  72.   reload; also, window size is maintained.
  73. Layout glitches fixed.
  74. Text selection glitches fixed.
  75. Other misc bugfixes and cleanups.

  78. Although this is alpha/beta software, I'm looking more for feedback on
  79. design and functionality than bug reports right now -- down the road
  80. the bulk of the program will be rewritten in C++ anyway, so don't take
  81. the current code too seriously.  But bug reports are welcome too.  New
  82. releases will probably come out about every 7-14 days until 1.0
  83. arrives.
